Introduced abroad in 2013, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is among the best-selling plug-in hybrid vehicles of all time. It made its debut in the North American market in 2018. The Outlander PHEV faces tough competition in the form of both all-electric crossover SUVs, such as the Tesla Model X and Audi e-Tron, and gas-powered counterparts, such as the Toyota Highlander and Honda CR-V. In this crowded market, the Outlander plug-in hybrid offers an enticing compromise, with an electric driving range of 22 miles and capabilities of a hybrid-powered gasoline engine.
With the included Level 1 EV charger, this electric vehicle can fully charge in around 8 hours. While this allows drivers to charge fully while parked for a while, Outlander drivers can maximize their all-electric range with a more powerful Level 2 charging station. With a Level 2 charger, the Outlander can charge from empty to full capacity in four hours. This fast charging speed allows drivers to top off or fully recharge at home or at the workplace and make daily trips or commutes purely on battery power. Despite the smaller battery pack typical of PHEV models, the Outlander offers DC fast charging capabilities.
