Polestar is one of the new disruptors in the EV space. As Volvo's electric-vehicle brand, it aims to combine high-tech features with a modern Swedish look. With a limited production run of only 1,500 units and a price tag starting at $155,000, the Polestar 1 is Polestar’s exclusive collector’s item plug-in hybrid.
Driving the front wheels, Polestar 1 plug-in hybrid has a turbo and supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor to make a combined 375 horsepower. To power the rear, this PHEV has a pair of electric motors, each producing 114 horsepower. This combination means the Polestar 1 has all-wheel drive and a total system output of 619 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque.
The interior of the Polestar 1 has a minimal and sophisticated Swedish design similar to its Volvo counterparts, the Volvo S90 sedan and V90 station wagon. In terms of technology, the Polestar 1 has a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.
The Polestar 1 is a sporty PHEV with an all-electric driving range of 52 miles and a combined system output of 619 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. The EPA has rated the Polestar 1 for fuel efficiency city/highway with a combined rating of 58 MPGe.
The Polestar 1’s relatively fast onboard 11 kW charger means the pack can be charged from empty to full in about 4 hours. To achieve that charging speed, electric vehicle drivers should install a capable 32-amp charging station such as the JuiceBox 32®. Using the JuiceBox 32 with a 240-volt supply of home energy is much faster than Polestar’s Level 1 charging cord, which requires 12 hours for a full charge via a 120-volt trickle charge.
