Toyota Prius Prime charging

Everything drivers need to know about the Toyota Prius Prime

The Toyota Prius has been the quintessential green car for over a decade. The Prius’s “Prime” version, the company’s brand name for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), raises the bar even higher for efficiency and reduced emissions. The plug-in variant of the classic liftback model is equipped with a 13.6kWh battery pack that provides 44 miles of all electric range.

For 2023, Toyota completely redesigned the Prius Prime from the angular design of the last-generation to something far more aerodynamic and sports-car like with a tapered slopping A-pillar, angular LED lights front and rear, large 12.3” infotainment screen, the Toyota bring chic-looks and modern amenities to Toyota’s flagship eco-millers. The Prius Prime isn’t short of function either, the hatchback now offers 20.3 cubic feet of cargo space, which gives it more utility than many mid-size sedans.

Charging the Toyota Prius Prime

The Prius Prime historically has been one of the most efficient PHEVs available, with the 2022 model achieving 133 miles per gallon equivalent and 25 miles on electric power alone. For the latest generation introduced in 2023, overall MPGe may be reduced but the new battery allows for 45 all electric miles.

That 44 miles of EV range makes the Prius Prime a class leader. After the electric power is depleted, the Prius Prime works like a conventional hybrid that mixes power from its gas engine and electric motor. At that stage, the Prius Prime is rated at an impressive 52 miles per gallon.

It’s quick and easy to charge the Prius Prime, upgrading from 2022’s 3.3 kW onboard charger to 6.6 kW to supplement its larger battery. With a highly recommended Level 2 charging station like the JuiceBox 32, Prius Prime drivers can recharge their PHEV quickly and cost-effectively at home. Unfortunately, the Prius Prime does not support DC fast charging.
